Thursday nights kids eat free from 4 - 8 at their deli. I am told that this is up to 6 kids per adult meal. You can't really beat that if you have kids!

Owl Release July 8th

The Southeastern Raptor Center, in collaboration with the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department, will release owls into the wild atKiesel Park on Thursday, July 8. The center will host an educational program at 6:30 p.m., followed by the owl release at 7 p.m. Citizens are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the scenery at Kiesel Park while taking part in this unique event.

The majority of the birds to be released are barred and Eastern screech owls. “Most of these birds were healthy fledglings that were mistaken for orphans,” said Liz Crandall, veterinary technician with the Southeastern Raptor Center.

Crandall will talk about not removing young, healthy wildlife; a history of the birds being released; and raptors. Two red-tailed hawks, used for educational purposes, will also be on hand.

The mission of the center’s rehabilitation section is to rehabilitate injured, ill, or orphaned birds of prey. Annually, the Southeastern Raptor Center takes in between 200 and 275 birds of prey from across the Southeast. Birds are generally brought in by members of the public, a network of southeastern rehabilitators and educational facilities, and state and federal agencies.

“Most of the birds come from within a 60-mile radius,” said Crandall.

The Southeastern Raptor Center is part of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. For more information, please call 334-844-3698.

Children's Book

For those of you who have Kindle's (and children) I have just published a children's picture book! It is priced at 99cents (which is the lowest price they would let me put it). It's got 17 pictures and shows a farmer planting his field and some of the crops that come from it. Good way to show kids where their food comes from. The farm pictured is my family's farm located here in Alabama.

Also, for any who might not know, the price of the Kindle just got reduced to $189. Nothing like a little competition to drive the price down. It's still quite an investment, but they are nice if you can afford it.

Friday, June 11th from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. - Chair Massage at the
Gnu's Room

Conar Rochford will be offering relaxing chair massages to erase the
stress of a long, hard, hot week! Only $10.00 for a luxurious 15 minute
session. Don't miss it!

We are initiating some "GNU" ideas for the summer, which will begin next week.

Try out our new Call-in Curbside Coffee (CCC)!

If you are in a hurry, but need some quality coffee to jump start your
day, you have a wonderful option effective with Monday, June 14th. To
participate in CCC is simple:

1. Come by the Gnu's Room and purchase a gift card for any desired
amount. We will keep your card on file and let you know when your
balance is running low.

2. Call in your coffee order 10 minutes prior to when you wish to pick it up.

3. Park in front of the Gnu's Room (you may need to pull in behind
other cars, but it will only be for a few seconds). We will deliver
your coffee to your vehicle!

Tea for Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. each week

Beginning on the 15th, Chip Self, our local tea aficionado, will be
offering free tea tastings at the Gnu's Room with lots of great
education to accompany each sample. Chip was instrumental in the Gnu's
Room carrying the fine selection of organic loose leaf teas we have.
For those non-coffee drinkers out there, this is the perfect
opportunity to see what else is available for the discriminating
palette.

Gnu Biking Crew at 6:00 p.m. each Thursday

This is a beginning biking group for women only (sorry guys - but you
have lots of other options!). The meeting place will be Blooming
Colors and the pace will be as slow as needed, with easy terrain.
Route maps will be available. Any type of bike is acceptable and if
you don't have a bike, the city of Auburn has loaner bikes. You use
the bike for two weeks at no cost and get a helmet by just showing
your i.d. The total time for the ride will be about an hour and a half
allowing time for warm up and cool down. Since the ride will not be
over before it starts to get dark, you will need to have lights for
the front and back of your bike, a reflective vest, and a helmet. June
17th will be the first group ride. If you have any questions, please
contact Ginger Purvis at 524-4767.

I've been meaning to post about New Leaf Galleries for a while now. It's an upscale furniture consignment store in Opelika, AL. Of course, it's not super cheap or free like I normally get excited about, but the prices are really good for furniture. The store is beautiful, all the furniture is great, and the people working there are really helpful. If you are looking for furniture this is definitely a good stop. Also, I just got an invitation to an Anniversary Yard Sale they are having.

Turtle Release this Saturday

The Forest Ecology Preserve is releasing turtles on Saturday:

Our turtle habitat is getting crowded! As the weather has warmed up and turtles have been on the move we see more turtles on the roadway. We've had several folks bring us turtles rescued from the busy streets of Auburn to come live a more peaceful life at the preserve. Come out Saturday morning @ 9:00am as we release two of these turtles back into the forest at the Ecology Preserve. Auburn Graduate and Preserve Volunteer Daisy Griffin will give a short presentation about box turtles followed by an optional hike. During the presentation there will be live turtles to view and touch. Meet at the Pavilion. Free Admission.

An Affordable CSA?

I have long been interested in joining a CSA group. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and basically boils down to you pay a monthly fee and get fresh, local veggies, fruit, eggs, meat, whatever, each week. I love this idea! I looked into it in Auburn and found that Randle Farms had a CSA program. I heard great and wonderful things about their produce. I couldn't afford their prices. So I am excited to hear about a new CSA coming to town. The Grow Alabama program is now delivering to Auburn. They seem to have reasonable prices and even let you customize your orders.

Art Exhibit at Jan Dempsey

The 12th Annual Juried Art Show and Transitions exhibition are currently on display at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center.

A reception for both exhibitions will be held on Saturday, May 15 from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. The reception is free and open to the public.

The Juried Art Show includes 37 works by 25 local artists that were judged by Richard Metzger, executive director of the Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Center and the Johnson Center for the Arts in Troy, Ala. Of the 37 works, nine were selected for special recognition. Winners will be announced at the reception.

Julie Plasketes and her son, Rivers Plasketes, are currently exhibiting Transitions, a collection of their works, to celebrate his graduation from high school and acceptance into the New York School of Visual Arts.

The May Sundown Concert Series at Town Creek Park continues on Thursday, May 13 at 6 p.m. with a performance by MUSE. Join the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department every Thursday in May for live musical performances at Auburn’s newest park, located on South Gay Street. Citizens are encouraged to bring a blanket, chairs, and picnic and enjoy an evening of FREE musical entertainment. Additional parking for the concert is available at Wrights Mill Road Elementary School.

MUSE is an Auburn-based, three-person vocal/acoustic group that has been performing throughout the Southeast for 32 years. The group has performed at events such as City Stages in Birmingham, Downtown Jam in Columbus, GA, and the SEC Basketball Tournament in New Orleans. With two albums and one CD of original music to their credit, MUSE's unique style has evolved through careful attention to and particular emphasis on creative vocal harmonies. With a repertoire of over 100 songs, the group boasts a number of original songs, as well as music by artists such as Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Eagles, The Beatles, James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet, and Paul Simon. Group members include Tom Harper on acoustic guitar and vocals; George Konstant on acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, harmonica, and vocals; and Larry Shaw on electric bass and vocals. Both Harper and Konstant are two of the group's original members.

Forest Ecology Preserve is on Facebook

The Forest Ecology Preserve is a nature park located out on College Street past the fisheries. Admission to the preserve is free to the public and it is open 7 days a week during sunlight hours. There are hiking trails, a pond, a turtle habitat, a bird viewing area w/ scope, a butterfly garden, nature playground and lots of other cool things to explore there. They are also always putting on various events that are usually interesting and cheap.

They recently started a Facebook page where they are able to post a myriad of updates. There are updates on there from upcoming events to hey the irises are blooming at the pond right now. I would definitely recommend checking it out.

On May 15th at 6 PM there will be a celebration for Caroline Donnelly's successful East Alabama Food Bank bicycle tour from St Augustine, FL to San Diego, CA. Please also celebrate Robert (Dr. Death) Donnelly's 31 years of teaching at Auburn University! Please bring food or drink to share and a monetary donation to the East Alabama Food Bank.

The Auburn Knights Orchestra is 19-piece jazz big band based out of Auburn, AL and is thought to be one of the oldest big band organizations in the world. Formed in 1930 at what was then known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API), now known as Auburn University, the band organized to play for dances and other musical events throughout the school year. During the summer months, band members took their show on tour, playing swing music at many clubs and beach resorts throughout the Southeast. Early band members had the opportunity to play alongside music legends such as Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, and Buddy Rich. Summer Swing in Opelika is back again starting May 11th. Go out and enjoy some music at Municipal Park in Opelika. Last year they offered free train rides before the concert, I don't know if that'll be going on this year or not, but it's a lot of fun either way.

The City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department's Summer Brochure will be available at City facilities beginning Monday, May 3. To catch a sneak preview of summer camps, programs, and activities, download a copy of the brochure online at www.auburnalabama.org/parks/brochure.asp.

The brochure includes information on summer camps, programs, workshops, special events, and much more. Registration for summer programs will be held weekdays from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Dean Road Recreation Center, 307 South Dean Road. Tuesday, May 4th, 2:00 p.m. - The Write Time

Writers at any level of expertise are invited to meet each week at the
Gnu's Room for an hour of inspiration, sharing and information. The
meetings are facilitated by Helen Silverstein, editor of The Southern
Women's Review. Each week you are encouraged to bring copies of work
you wish to share and have edited. Those in the group who have the
time may volunteer to critique/edit. Please limit the work you bring
to between 10 and 20 pages, since this is a weekly group. During at
least every other group meeting, there will be a brief presentation on
different writing techniques. If you would like to participate, but
the meeting time is not convenient, or if you have any questions about
the meetings, please email Helen at

Wednesday, May 5th, 5:30 p.m. - Coffee Cupping

Amsterdam Cafe and the Gnu's Room are teaming up for a special event
just in time for Mother's Day. Former Auburn resident, Olivia deBelle
Byrd's recently published book, Miss Hildreth Wore Brown, Anecdotes of
a Southern Belle, will be featured at a luncheon and book signing.
Tickets for the event are $25.00 and include your choice of 1 of 3
delicious entrees, a non-alcoholic beverage, tax and gratuity, plus a
signed copy of the book. Ms. deBelle Byrd will be on hand to share
selections from the book and will be delighted to inscribe a copy of

Saturday, May 8th, 7:00 p.m. - Live Music with Jason Connelly

Jason Connelly makes a return concert appearance at the Gnu's Room. If
you missed his concert in February, you won't want to miss this chance
to hear his soulful sounds. If you have heard him before, there is no
doubt you will want to grab an opportunity to hear him again.

Connelly originally hails from Fort Meyers, Florida, but spent some
formative years in Smith's Station, Alabama before settling in the
Atlanta area. His vocal roots are from a gospel choir and they shine
through the delivery of his songs. Having spent 10 years traveling and
singing, Connelly is still learning and perfecting the craft of
songwriting, but he has a lot to share. He says, "In the beginning it
was all about melody and filling a floor. Now after years of open road
soul-searching, it's about life and all of its missed opportunities
and misguided emotions. If the floor fills this time, it's because I
said something worth hearing." There will be no cover for this event,
however, a suggested donation of $5.00 will go to the performer, and

I met a local mom the other day who is in the process of opening a new store in Opelika called Mamunchis. The more she told me about it, the more interested I was so I thought I'd pass it along.

Here's the info:

If you're on FB we have a fan page and all of our class descriptions are under the notes tab.

Our website is www.mamunchis.com and it should be published by Wednesday.

The focus of our store is on organic, affordable and fair trade products for the growing family. We'll have organic play clothes, cloth diapers, body care products for the whole family, all types of nursing wear for breastfeeding. We'll also have Medela products and a lot of items from local moms. We want to create an outlet for local moms to sell their products too.

Our classes are going to include:

Mommy and me type classes like Kindermusik, Family Fun, Spanish for Toddlers and Art classes.
Drop in playdates for $5 per child
Free story time on Fridays.
Parent education classes including Infant and Child CPR, newborn care, Happiest Baby on the Block, breastfeeding classes, cloth diapering and babywearing classes.
Free Nursing Cafe where breastfeeding moms can come and meet other moms, weigh the baby, enjoy some lactation tea and consult with our breastfeeding counselor.

We're going to have a Ribbon Cutting and an Open House on Thursday from 4-7. We have refreshments and all of the toys out for the kids to play on. This will be when we open as well.

The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University will combine two of its most popular events, the 3rd Annual Gift Shop Craft Show and May Day Celebration for Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 10 am – 4 pm.

Local and regional artists will be selling their works, while Alabama traditional potter Jerry Brown, quilter Bettye Kimbrough, and fiddle maker Gene Ivey provide demonstrations. There will be live music, children’s art activities, food vendors and a festive community dance around the maypole.

Last year, the JCSM Craft Show had over 600 visitors who enjoyed browsing the selection of works in ceramics, jewelry, photography, textiles, and much more. This event combines activities for families and art enthusiasts alike. Join us at the museum to celebrate springtime and our regional artists.

I just redeemed another free $5.00 Amazon gift card from Swagbucks. I started using Swagbucks in April of last year, and since then this is my 11th free $5.00 gift card to Amazon.com. And I'm not one of those crazy go out and do all their promotions, make my friends sign up, download to toolbar kind of folks. Nope, that's what I'm getting just using it as my plain old search engine. I love, love, love when I get a giftcard to Amazon because I must spend it on Amazon which means it's like a treat and can't be stolen by the grocery budget. There are so many options on Amazon it's not hard to find something I want. I tend to use them up buying books for my Kindle or I've saved them up to get a Klean Kanteen or I'll use it to buy a kid's book to send to my nieces and nephews. The point is there are lots of options. I was happy to get another gift card to use and wanted to pass on my experience for any who haven't checked it out yet.

If you don't know what Swagbucks is yet it's essentially a search engine, but you sign up for an account and when you use the search engine you'll slowly accrue "Swagbucks" on your account. You can then trade your swagbucks in for lots of different prizes. I obviously always get the Amazon card, but there are lots of options. It usually takes about a month of normal use for me to have enough for a $5 Amazon card. You can check it out here.

Earth Day Owl Release

On Thursday evening, April 22nd at 6:30 pm go to the Forest Ecology Preserve and see real live owls released into the wild. These owls are from the Southeastern Raptor Rehab Center and are native owls that were injured and then nursed back to health and are now ready to be released back into the wild. Meet at the Pavilion and hear a short presentation by Liz Crandall, then watch her release screech and barred owls.This is truly a great Earth Day event and it is free and open to the public.

I took my daughters by Sikes Feed today and they had live baby chicks in a big tub in the middle of the store. When we live in the city kids don't always get a lot of chances to see live animals. Singer/songwriters are invited to participate in a monthly competition
at the Gnu's Room. The entry fee is only $4.00, payable the evening of
the competition, but you must email tina@thegnusroom.com in advance to
reserve your spot. Each contestant will be allotted 10 minutes to
perform two original songs. A panel of judges will narrow the field to
the top three, who will then perform one additional song. The winner
be chosen by the judges and awarded a cash prize of $100.00. General
admission is $5.00. Come and support your favorite performer!

Thursday, April 22nd, 6:30 p.m. - Science Cafe Auburn

Douglas Coutts, a visiting professor on assignment from the United
Nations World Food Programme in Auburn's Department of Nutrition and
Food Science, will be speaking on the topic: "The Empty Plate:
Addressing Local and World Hunger." A brief Q&A will follow the
presentation.

Coutts has developed and taught Auburn's first undergraduate course on
world hunger and has assisted in designing a hunger studies minor. He
has more than 25 years of experience with WFP, more recently as
country director for Bangladesh, where he oversaw the organization's
single-largest development operation in the world, which included
integrated food security, school feeding and refugee operations,
nutritional support and HIV/AIDS awareness and community health
programs.

Friday, April 23rd, 5:30 p.m. - Book Discussion

Marc Silverstein, Hollifield Professor of English at Auburn
University, specializes in modern and contemporary drama, feminist
theory, postmodernism and literary theory. Silverman will lead a book
discussion on Toni Morrison's Beloved. The discussion is open to the
public.

Morrison's 1987 novel, Beloved, was a critical success and earned both
a Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the American Book Award. The novel,
her fifth, is loosely based on the life and legal case of the slave
Margaret Garner, about whom Morrison later wrote in the opera Margaret
Garner (2005). The book's epigraph reads: "Sixty Million and more," by
which Morrison refers to the estimated number of slaves who died in
the slave trade.

Friday, April 23rd, 7:00 p.m. - Live Music with Uncle Roy

Uncle Roy has been playing music for 40 years, learning it in truck
stops, roadhouses and honky tonks all over the world. He loves the
classics, as has played with some of the best including: Freddy
Fender, Jack Greene, Little Jimmie Dickens, Ace Cannon, Loretta Lynn,
and Junior Brown. The Uncle Roy Show is an eclectic mix of roots rock
and roll, hardcore honkytonk and soul, country rhythm & blues plus the
samba and bossa nova of Brazil with ethnic folkloric styles of Mexico,
the Caribbean, and Hawaii. As a self taught musician with too many
styles to name, let's just call it “folk music.”

Uncle Roy performed at this year's 280 Boogie, and is looking forward
to introducing his music to a whole new group of fans at the Gnu's
Room! There is no cover for the event, but a suggested donation of
$5.00 will go to the musician. CDs will be available for purchase. For

Saturday, April 24th, 7:00 p.m. - Fundraiser/Book Signing

Meet author/journalist/speaker Karen Spears Zacharias and help support
local ministries!

What does it really mean to be blessed by God? With Southern charm and

2010), author Karen Spears Zacharias shows how the “prosperity” gospel
has led us astray from true Christianity and has helped create people
and churches focused on greed.

Zacharias, who will be in town for several events related to her
latest book, "Will Jesus Buy Me a Double-Wide? ('Cause I Need More
Room for my Plasma TV)," will be keeping with the theme of her latest
publication by speaking at two fundraising events. The first will take
place at the Auburn UU Fellowship, 450 E. Thach, on Saturday evening.
Your donations, plus 10% of all book sales will go to the East Alabama
Food Bank. Every dollar contributed enables the Food Bank to acquire
14 pounds of food through the national network. The event is sponsored
by the Gnu's Room and Mama Mocha's Coffee Roastery.

Karen Spears Zacharias will be speaking at St. Dunstan’s, the
Episcopal Church at Auburn University, 136 E. Magnolia. Your

Starry Nights! The Forest Ecology preserve and the Auburn Astronomical
Society are hosting an Astronomy program on Saturday, April 17th from
7:00- 10:00 p.m. at the Mary Olive Thomas Demonstration Forest on
Moore's Mill Road (from Auburn, take right on Moore's Mill Road off of
Samford Avenue, go through 3 traffic lights, 1 mile on left past the
Ogletree Shopping Village and new Publix). Join the Louise Kreher Forest
Ecology Preserve staff and the Auburn Astronomical Society for a night
under the stars. Enjoy a short program on stars , planets and
telescopes, a space movie, constellation laser show, high-powered
telescopes and some out-of this world snacks. Admission is $3 for
non-members and $2 for members. Not recommended for children under 5.

For anyone looking for a good checking account I would recommend ING. We have used them for checking, savings, and a mortgage and have always been really happy with the service. They don't seem to have the crazy fees most banks like to charge for things and they pay competitive interest. Even personal checking accounts get interest.

I'm seeing more and more Kindles around town, so I thought I'd remind everyone that Amazon has a lot of free Kindle e books on their site. If you don't have a Kindle, you can still download the ebooks, they have free kindle reader software for computers, ipads, iphones, and blackberries. You get more eyestrain from using these devices, but sometimes it's nice to have a book on there.

To find free Kindle books just go to Amazon and click on Kindle books in the menu. Then you can either do a search for 0.00 (which should bring up all books with a price of $0.00) or you can look at the bestsellers list. Funny, but usually the latest free releases are on the best sellers list because you don't actually have to pay for them. If you look at best sellers you get more recent items. If you are looking for classics I would search for 0.00. They have a lot of good older material including Treasure Island, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Origin of Species, Pride and Prejudice, the list goes on and on. Here's what's happening at the Gnu's Room this week. If you aren't familiar with it, the Gnu's Room is a great little local bookstore for used and rare books. Their books aren't cheap, but the community activities they provide are. It's located on Gay Street next to Amsterdam Cafe.

Tuesday, April 13th, 2:00 p.m. - The Write Time

Writers at any level of expertise are invited to meet each week at the
Gnu's Room for an hour of inspiration, sharing and information. The
meetings are facilitated by Helen Silverstein, editor of The Southern
Women's Review. Each week you are encouraged to bring copies of work
you wish to share and have edited. Those in the group who have the
time may volunteer to critique/edit. Please limit the work you bring
to between 10 and 20 pages, since this is a weekly group. During at
least every other group meeting, there will be a brief presentation on
different writing techniques. If you would like to participate, but
the meeting time is not convenient, or if you have any questions about
the meetings, please email Helen at

Tuesday, April 13th, 7:00 p.m. - Live Music with Marc Douglas Berardo

Marc Douglas Berardo, from Westerly, Rhode Island. is a different kind
of singer/songwriter. In what amounts to song-length works of fiction,
Berardo's sharply drawn portraits cast a net on unusual and
interesting characters and places. With a painter's eye for detail,
and music firmly rooted in the great American sound, Berardo sings
about circus retirees, expatriates in Florida rum bars, union iron
workers, old poets, aimless New York City debutantes, near death car
crashes, hard-nosed fishermen and of course, the changes that
experience brings to everyone. He does this simply and well with what
Rambles Cultural Magazine calls: "careful images and great tunes."

Berardo has been compared to a soft-toned Don Henley, or a James
Taylor with a literary side. He performs in coffeehouses, house
concerts, restaurants and bars throughout the country and will be
fresh from an appearance at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, GA when he
brings his unique sound to the Gnu's Room. There will be a suggested
donation of $5.00 for the performance and Berardo will have cds

Wednesday, April 14th, 5:30 p.m. - Coffee Cupping

Join Sarah Barnett, proprietor of Mama Mocha's Coffee Roastery at the
Gnu's Room, for a professional coffee cupping. Barnett will be
offering a cupping (tasting) every Wednesday. Space is limited and is
on a first come, first served basis. Experience coffee from three
different regions and learn the subtle, and sometimes not so subtle,
differences in beans from various countries. If you participate in a
cupping, you may purchase the featured beans at a 25% discount on the
day of the cupping.

Friday, April 16th, 7:00 p.m. - Film Screening

The Gnu's Room will host local filmmaker Alessio Summerfield for the
screening of his first short film, "Chernobyl." The short was filmed
entirely in Auburn with local talent and runs approximately 38
minutes. Summerfield will be present for a brief Q&A after the
screening.

Saturday, April 17th - 280 Boogie

The Gnu's Room and Mama Mocha's Coffee Roastery, along with some of
the other Shops @ Southside are manning booths this year at the Boogie.

HERB & DOROTHY tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with
very modest means. In the early 1960s, when very little attention was paid to Minimalist
and Conceptual Art, Herb and Dorothy Vogel quietly began purchasing the works of unknown artists. Devoting all of Herbâ€™s salary to purchase art they liked, and living on Dorothyâ€™s paycheck alone, they
continued collecting artworks guided by two rules: the piece had to be affordable, and it had to be small enough to fit in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. Within these limitations, they proved themselves
curatorial visionaries; most of those they supported and befriended went on to become world-renowned artists. Their circle includes: Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert
Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, Robert Barry, Lucio Pozzi, and Lawrence Weiner.

I just pressed a button on my Roomba and sat down to type on my computer. As I'm sitting here , my floor is being vacuumed. Wait, a roomba...is that frugal?

For the most part, I always choose the frugal (read cheap) path. I was number 4 in a family of 6 kids, so I grew up with hand-me-downs and little extra cash. We always had enough, and I never felt deprived by any means, but I also learned to make do with what I had. I got into the routine of figuring out how to make things work, or buying second hand goods or looking for sales. This has been really helpful to me in life. However, I have been slowly learning that sometimes, if you can afford it, it is worth it to pay for quality and convenience.

For us, the Roomba falls into the worth it category. I have a lot of other helpful gadgets in my life, but right now, as I watch my toddler walking around leaving a trail of cracker crumbs and the Roomba coming right behind vacuuming it up, the Roomba is my favorite.

starts next Monday. This year's theme is Web of Life.

Summer Camps are coming back. Camp will run throughout June:

June 1-4: Camp Discovery (rising 3rd & 4th graders) incl. Friday evening session
June 7-11: Young Naturalists (rising 1st & 2nd graders)
June 14-18: Young Naturalists
June 21-25: Eco-Rangers (rising 5th & 6th graders)
June 28 - July 1: Camp Discovery (incl. Thur. evening session)

The theme this year, "The Web of Life," will engage campers in learning about how living things are dependent upon each other and upon the non-living environment. 18th Annual Fishing Rodeo

If you have children that are 12 or under you may be interested in the annual fishing rodeo on May 15th from 8 - 11am. It is $5.00 per child, but you get to go out and fish all morning, and you get a free t-shirt and bait (first 200). When I took my children we didn't get so much as a nibble on our fishing line, but we still had loads of fun. My advice is to be sure to bring a cooler with plenty of water and some snacks and just enjoy being outside with your kids. Also, get there early so you can snag a spot in the shade ;-)

ABC 123

The ABC 123 program through Auburn parks and rec still has a few slots open. They told me people could still register their children (ages 3-5, must be potty trained) through the end of this week. I've had children in this program many times and really liked it. It's also really cheap!

Friday, April 9th, 6:00 p.m. - "How to Use Emotional Freedom Technique
(EFT) To Reach Your Goals"

The Gnu's Room presents this free seminar, led by Nancy T. Hand, JD
who will provide participants with a brief history of EFT, how to do
it, and how to use it to "clear" negative beliefs and self-talk that
may be keeping them from progressing toward their goals.

Nancy Tilton Hand is the owner of Negotiation Ninja, through which she
provides Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) licensure training and
training in all levels of negotiation and communication – from rank
beginner to CEO level negotiations and beyond. She offers congruence
coaching, negotiation coaching, and project-specific coaching for
public speaking fears, salary negotiations, and lofty goals. Clients
and training participants learn how to become congruent with their
desires and negotiate on their own behalf from a place of balance,
calm, and power.

Hand is an attorney, mediator, NLP Trainer, NLP Master Practitioner
and has been a Licensed Practitioner of NLP for over 25 years. In
addition, Nancy has extensive experience in Emotional Freedom
Technique (EFT-ADV), Silva Method, and the use of intentionality and
Law Of Attraction. She has studied with the pioneers and experts in
the fields of linguistics, law, human behavior and cutting-edge
behavioral change technologies.

Saturday, April 10th, 7:00 p.m. - Live Music by John Peterson

After a brief hiatus from performing, (PhD programs are pretty
demanding!), John Peterson brings his original tunes back to the Gnu's
Room for the evening. Peterson's cd," Scene of Changery" can be heard
in frequent rotation at the store. His lyrics are thoughtful,
sometimes irreverent, but always entertaining. Whether strumming the
guitar, mandolin, or dobro, picking the banjo or playing harmonica,
Peterson never fails to leave his audience wanting to hear more of his
mix of blues/folk/country.

Originally from Michigan, Peterson always wanted to live in the South.
Attending Auburn University has given him that chance and we are so
glad he's here. Suggested donation, which will go to the performer, is

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

If you've got any hazardous materials you need to dispose of properly Saturday, April 10 is the time to do so. The City of Auburn has one day every year where you can bring your hazardous waste and have it disposed of properly for free.

In order to take advantage of this you may bring your hazardous waste (up to 20 pounds) to the Environmental Services Complex at 365-A North Donahue Drive on April 10th between 9am and 2pm. You will need a copy of your Auburn water bill to provide proof of residency. This is only for people residing within the City of Auburn. Auburn City Fest

It's time again for Auburn's annual bash, CityFest! CityFest gets me excited because it's a really fun day filled with lots of free entertainment. There will be huge blowup jumpy house things for the kids, a birds of prey exhibit, Aubie will be wandering around, the kids can get their face-painted and a storyteller will be entertaining any who can sit still long enough. There is also supposed to be a performance by the Bama Air Dogs, and plenty of good musical talent playing. Not to mention the fun of carnival food and checking out all the cool vendors (although that part is less frugal).

Easter Egg Hunt April 3

Auburn is once again having a big easter egg hunt for the entire city. Sounds like a good time...

Join the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department for the 29th Annual Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by Wachovia, on Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m. at Kiesel Park. This FREE community event is one of the largest egg hunts in Lee County and features more than 25,000 eggs hidden over a four acre area. Children ages 12 and under are invited to attend. Enjoy live music, free soft drinks, balloons, and a chance to have your picture taken with the Easter Bunny! The Greater Kiwanis Club of Auburn will be selling hot dogs and hamburgers. Proceeds will benefit needy families throughout the community. In the event of rain, the egg hunt will be held on Sunday, April 4 at 2 p.m.

Due to the Wire Road Bridge Replacement Project, citizens attending the Easter Egg Hunt may need to access Kiesel Park via alternate routes along AL Highway 14. Saturday, March 27th, 6:30 p.m. - "The Southern Wing and a Prayer Tour"

Authors River Jordan and Shellie Rushing Tomlinson were challenged by
a mutual fan to join forces and take their respective radio selves on
the road to interview book sellers, book clubs, readers and yes – even
each other - as they create shows focused on great storytelling. The
challenge has been accepted and The Southern Wing and A Prayer Tour
took flight on March 18th and ends on April 1. They are making one of
their stops at the Gnu's Room. Book lovers will not want to miss out
on the storytelling fun run as River and Shellie charge across the
south reading from "Saints In Limbo" (River Jordan) and "Suck Your
Stomach In and Put Some Color On," (Shellie Rushing Tomlinson)
interview each other with surprise questions and comments at every
stop, talk to book clubs about their favorite new reads, and query
those great unsung heroes – the booksellers themselves about just how
they found themselves supporting thousands of writers and millions of
written words every year, all of which will be featured in upcoming

Tuesday, March 30th, 2:00 p.m. - The Write Time

An hour of inspiration, sharing and information for writers at all
levels of expertise, facilitated by Helen Silverstein.

Friday, April 2nd, 7:00 p.m. - Expressions Cafe

Poets, storytellers, musicians, spoken word artists, writers, and
actors are invited to perform their work on the first Friday evening
of each month for an appreciative and enthusiastic audience. Everyone
is welcome!
